Communication for Social Change (CSC)
Communication for Social Change (CSC) is important for resolving most of the sociopolitical problems in Bangladesh. It includes seeking constructive changes in society through communication and interaction. It is especially relevant in Bangladesh for alleviating poverty and empowering the society, given the socio-economic levels of most of the populace. Through participatory communication, the disadvantaged people can express their opinions and contribute to decisions that affect them, which is quite rare in Third World countries especially in rural areas due to lack of informational and material resources. Promotion of gender equality is one of the key aspects of CSC in which a significant contribution can be made. In Bangladesh, there are certain barriers to women’s ability to pursue opportunities due to cultural gender roles. In this context, communication does help to educate the community on women’s rights and change norms. In the same line, health communication is of a great importance for enhancing the health of people. Campaigns on promotion of maternal health, sanitation, nutrition, etc need to be implemented in order to minimize the maximum number of deaths and diseases that could have been avoided. Both, the environmental issues as well as the people’s socio-political instability went hand in hand. Bangladesh has suffered a great deal from climate change above and beyond people’s capacities to adapt. Herein lies the reason why CSC should be used, to inform locals about climate change, disaster management and environmentally safe practices.
