Human Rights & Empowerment

The issues of human rights and empowerment are considered very important within the context of Bangladesh, given the struggles of the country with gender inequality, child labor, and freedom of expression. According to the UN Human Rights Office, more than 9 million children in Bangladesh are engaged in work that is threatening the future of schooling and undermining their potential. Empowerment of the most marginalized communities, especially women and girls, will, therefore, be at the core of the social justice and economic development processes. It is for this reason that the UN reports, “Empowerment of women and girls is indispensable in attaining sustainable development” (UN Women, 2020), pinpointing the necessity for such initiatives which would effect change in realizing gender equality and human rights. NGOs especially have an important advocacy role to play for the realization of these rights through implementing community education and mobilization programs, thus building a more just and equitable society in Bangladesh.
